Jun 26, 2009

TORONTO, June 26 /CNW/ - Donald A. Stewart, Sun Life Financial Chief
Executive Officer, has been appointed Chairman of Canada's new, national Task
Force on Financial Literacy. The announcement was made today by Finance
Minister James Flaherty at a news conference in Toronto.
"I have had a strong belief for many years on the need for individuals to
become empowered consumers of financial services," Stewart said. "So I was
delighted when the Government of Canada invited me - and a group of eminent
Canadians - to consider and report on ways to support all generations to grow
into knowledgeable managers of their personal savings, taxation, investments,
debt and protection."
The Task Force will consult Canadians of all ages in all regions and
identify best global practices in advancing financial literacy. The Task Force
will provide information later this year on its plan of action and timetable
to deliver a report to the Minister of Finance late next year.
In Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government made a clear
commitment to protect Canadians by establishing an independent Task Force to
make recommendations on a cohesive national strategy on financial literacy for
Canadians. For more information on Canada's Task Force on Financial Literacy,
